On November 28, Macardo Swiss Distillery GmbH opened its new building in Strohwilen, Canton Thurgau. The Macardo world includes not only the most sustainable distillery in Switzerland, but also the most innovative barrel storage facility in the world, as well as bed & breakfast, an event location, a bar, and a walk-in store.

Macardo started in 2007 in a small cheese dairy in Strohwilen. The new location is just two kilometers away. With the new building, Macardo wants to continue a tradition of enjoyment here. For this reason, the cheese dairy building has been preserved. The new distillery is located in it. Around it are the barrel cellar, premium B&B, Honesty Bar, Cigar Lounge, event location and walk-in store. "Our history shows that people not only want to buy our products, they also want to see where and how we make them. That's why we invented the Macardo world of enjoyment and experience," says Bössow, explaining the concept, whose architecture bears the signature of Florian Öttl.

Swissness and innovation

Macardo belongs to the generation of young distilleries. All the more remarkable is its track record, which includes over 20 national and international awards. Andy Bössow explains the recipe for success as follows: "Swissness, tradition, innovation, craftsmanship, small batch, premium quality and sustainability. A philosophy that we can pursue even more specifically in the new building." With this, Bössow also addresses the new barrel warehouse. For this, Macardo has set itself particularly high goals and developed an innovation together with the Winterthur University of Applied Sciences. "We call it Drum Storage 4.0," Andy Bössow says proudly. "In our barrel storage, there is a microclimate that allows for the best aging. The barrels are individually suspended and monitored with sensors." Considering that barrel and aging determine about 60 percent of the final distillate quality and character, this is an investment that will probably pay off.

You would have liked to open the Macardo Swiss Distillery with an open day? How can you get to know Macardo despite Corona?

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the open house will have to wait. However, since November 28, our Walk-in Shop, Honesty Bar with Cigar Lounge and Premium B&B are open. Guided tours are also possible in small groups.

Macardo stands for enjoyment. Is it possible to learn pleasure from you?

Of course. Anyone who knows how enjoyment is created enjoys in a completely different way. That's why we offer a wide range of courses, including distilling courses, sensory courses or bartending and cigar courses.

With the opening, you are presenting two new single malts at once. What can whisky fans look forward to?

At the start of the new Macardo world, we can't miss what started it all: our Swiss Premium Whisky. The number 1904 of the "Opening Edition" stands for the year of construction of the cheese dairy where our new distillery is located. The whisky is limited to 1904 bottles. Even rarer is "The Slightly Smoky". A slightly smoky single malt, refined in a Laphroaig cask. There are only 345 hand-numbered bottles of it.

Macardo also has a Premium B&B. Who is this offer for? 

To business travelers, tourists or guests of events in our event location. But also to the visitors of our courses. Registration, booking and payment can be done via the Internet, or on site via the 24-hour self-check-in terminal.
