Macardo wins Thurgau Tourism Award 2022

In the presence of numerous guests from the tourism industry in eastern Switzerland, Macardo Swiss Distillery GmbH from Amlikon-Bissegg received the Thurgau Tourism Prize worth 10,000 Swiss francs in Weinfelden.

With this award, the jury recognizes the entrepreneurial achievement and the high level of innovation behind the implementation of the Macardo World of Enjoyment and Experience, the Macardo "Fasslager 4.0" and the Macardo sustainability concept.

Jasmin Wagner, Head of Marketing at Thurgauer Kantonalbank emphasized the importance of such innovation awards: "With the Tourism Award, we want to make a contribution to tourism development and give something back to Thurgau."

Walter Schönholzer, member of the government of the Canton of Thurgau, congratulates the prize winner and appreciates the courage and the innovative implementation of the concept of the Macardo Distillery. After the official award ceremony (see picture) the floor was handed over to the tourism award winner.

Martina Bössow, owner of Macardo Swiss Distillery, was visibly moved by the award. When asked what the prize money would be invested in, she replied: "We would definitely like to invest part of it in the staff, as it is primarily the employees who are responsible for the success of Macardo". At Macardo, the toast is not champagne, but a good whisky.

"Typical Thurgau in many respects".

Macardo Swiss Distillery has moved. Due to lack of space at the old location. The new one in Amlikon-Bisegg used to be a cheese dairy. Today it has become a distillery with state-of-the-art infrastructure. Andy and Martina Bössow, who are behind Macardo, skillfully combine tradition and innovation here.

Even today, Macardo still fires its products by hand, in small batches and with fire. The rest is high-tech under the sign of sustainability. This philosophy runs through the entire plant, which since the conversion and new construction is more than just a distillery.

It also includes a unique event location - the new barrel warehouse - a premium bed & breakfast with business apartments, a bar and a cigar lounge with a walk-in store. This facility, the Tourism Award jury agreed, has the potential to become a beacon for Thurgau tourism.

The electronically monitored aging of the distillates in the barrel storage facility is a world first, and the world of experience and enjoyment that Macardo has initiated here is stylish, sustainable, and simply typical of Thurgau. A prime example of innovation and courage - components one would wish for in an award winner.

First "Swiss Thurbon

In addition, one of the Macardo whiskies even bears the canton of Thurgau in its name: The Swiss Thurbon. This name was created as a clear commitment to the home and origin of the Bössow family.

After the bourbon whiskey won several international awards and the makers were made aware that the name "Bourbon" was protected under the Swiss and U.S. trade agreement, "Swiss Bourbon" became "Swiss Thurbon."

The whiskies, spirits, vieilles and other products of the Macardo Distillery are made from Thurgau grain, corn, rye, barley and water from its own source.

Thurgau Tourism Award as a motivational boost

Thurgau Tourism, with the support of Thurgauer Kantonalbank as prize sponsor, is awarding the Thurgau Tourism Prize for the 21st time. The prize is endowed with 10,000 Swiss francs and is an important motivation and marketing tool for service providers.

This prize is intended to honor exemplary entrepreneurial thinking and action in line with the tourism strategy. At the same time, the prize is intended as an incentive and motivation for further pioneering activities and offers in the region.

From the applications submitted, the expert jury nominated four tourist businesses for the Tourism Award in 2021. The public was able to vote by means of online voting. The result of the online voting together with the evaluation of the expert jury resulted in the Macardo Swiss Distillery as a worthy winner.

The award ceremony took place on March 17 during the Thurgau Tourism Forum in Weinfelden.18.03.2022
