Whisky from Thurgau: New distillery inaugurated in Strohwilen

When one thinks of the canton of Thurgau, whisky is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Nor is the village of Strohwilen likely to be a household name. So it should be all the more surprising that Strohwilen is now home to one of the most modern whisky distilleries in Switzerland.

Macardo Swiss Distillery opens its new building in Strohwilen on the site of an old cheese dairy to the public on November 28. The former cheese dairy building now houses a distillery. Whiskies, spirits, vieilles and marc distillates are produced there. In addition to the Schnapps distillery, a barrel cellar, a bed and breakfast and an event location have been built around the new building. "People not only want to buy our products, they also want to see where and how we produce them," says Macardo owner Andy Bössow. That, he says, is how the idea for the Macardo Genuss- und Erlebniswelt came about.

Sustainable whisky distilling

For the new building, it was important to Büssow to include the sustainability factor. The concept for this is unique in the distillery ice scene: "We use firewood, solar energy, geothermal energy, water from our own source and regional ingredients. In our cycle, no log, no liter of water and no raw material is wasted," says Bössow.

World first in drum storage

The barrel storage system at the new Macardo distillery incorporates a world first, developed in collaboration with the Winterthur University of Applied Sciences. "We call it barrel storage 4.0," says Bössow. "The barrels are individually suspended and monitored with sensors." The idea is to be able to weigh the amount of alcohol in the individual barrels.

After just under a year of construction, the World of Pleasure and Experience and its new products were supposed to be inaugurated with a grand opening event. But the Corona crisis threw a spanner in Bössow's works. From November 28, however, the distillery will be open for guided tours in small groups.
